Does Your Dog Get Freaked Out Over Fireworks? Here’s What You Should Do...

Analysis by Dr. Karen Shaw Becker

Story at-a-glance

  • The long July 4th weekend is almost upon us, and many of you will be celebrating the holiday with family get-togethers, backyard barbeques, and possibly taking in a local fireworks display.
  • For pet guardians, it’s important to remember that while Independence Day festivities are great fun for human family members, our furry housemates often don’t share our enthusiasm. In fact, July 5th is historically the busiest day of the year for animal shelters, because so many family pets, frightened by the sights and sounds of fireworks, flee the house or yard (or their owner’s arms) and escape into the night.
  • There are a number of hazards for pets around the July 4th holiday, all of which you’ll want to prepare for so you can keep your furry companion healthy and safe.
  • Some things you’ll want TO do include insuring your pet is wearing up-to-date identification… isn’t allowed access to “people food” or “adult beverages…” and can’t get hold of citronella products, matches, or lighter fluid.
  • Things you’ll want to be sure NOT to do include applying potentially toxic human sunscreen or insect repellent to your pet… allowing your dog or cat access to glow jewelry… forcing your furry friend into a costume against her will… bringing her along to a fireworks display… or letting her outside after dark.
